All NEW - AIM Alum at the Tulsa Workshop 2012

We are very excited about the upcoming Tulsa Workshop, March 21-24, where we will be focusing on bringing the good news of Jesus to the most broken parts of our lives. I personally invite you to come and be renewed, challenged and encouraged in your journey with God and the ministry you have to the brokenness in your world. This is a FREE event whose main focus is on encouraging you, the body of Christ, to continue to follow Jesus with all their hearts.

This month marks the 9th year we will have had an AIM Alumni event with the Tulsa Workshop as our backdrop. Every year we have around 70 AIM alumni come together to share in our common heritage. We have decided to make some needed improvements in order to make that experience much better. We are actually hosting 2 different events which complement each other and, we believe, will bless you even more.

Thursday, March 22nd

Tulsa Workshop / AIMapalooza '11

Calling all A-cubed,

I want to personally invite everyone to the Tulsa Workshop, which is coming up this week, March 23-26. Many wonderful and powerful speakers will be here, all considering the topic, “Let the Chains Fall Away”. They will focus on finding freedom from those things that hold us back from being what Christ created us to be. You can find the entire schedule at www.tulsaworkshop.org.

As an alumnus, though, my favorite part of Workshop is what happens on Friday night beginning after the evening keynote (around 9). All AIM alumni are invited to be part of what we call, AIMapalooza. We will meet at the Memorial Drive Church of Christ building (747 S. Memorial Dr.) in the “Rainbow Room”, which is a large area downstairs. AIMapalooza is a very casual event where 40-70 of us eat and drink (whatever items that we all bring - check the event page), sing, and visit, visit, visit. We officially wrap up around 11:30, but you can stay as long as the conversation lasts. It is such an encouraging event and this year we are thrilled to share with you a few of the things we’ve been working on with the AIM Alumni Association (A-Cubed). This group is a grass roots effort to help AIM graduates come off the field with more support, information and encouragement so that their transitions can be smoother and healthier for them spiritually and emotionally. This August we plan to launch a new effort to offer some concrete help that will be a great blessing to returning AIMers. Come and find out how you can be a part of this work-in-progress!

So, grab a snack or a drink and plan on joining us Friday, March 25 around 9pm for AIMapalooza. If you have any questions, just let AIM Alum know. We can’t wait to see you!

PS - Bring your non-AIM spouses/family. All are invited to share in our annual reunion! You are their ticket in. :)

Would you attend AIMAPALOOZA MALIBU?

Every year we hear Alumni tell us, "You should do an AIMAPALOOZA" at the Pepperdine Lectureships in May. Well, we've started listening to what you are saying.

We want to know, would you attend a West Coast Aimapalooza if it were Thursday evening during the Pepperdine Lectures? If so, let us know. We'd love to put one together! We could use your help!

Contact Chris Johnson, Jason Thornton, or Joe Tipps on Facebook if you'd like to be involved with Aimapalooza Malibu.

Looking forward and thinking back

“I thank my God every time I remember you. In all my prayers for all of you, I always pray with joy because of your partnership in the gospel…”. As Paul sat in prison, he drew tremendous comfort from remembering the shared experiences he had with a group of Christians who shared the same focus. One can surmise that every time he was reunited with this group he would add to his storehouse of memories and draw ever increasing encouragement from them.

In March I was greatly privileged to have two such reunion experiences with those that I share a partnership. First was the AIM Reentry and graduation. Despite the fact that there were many who I did not know, the connection was instantaneous and the experience was chock full of renewing conversations and inspiring realizations. A special thanks to Tim, John, Joe, Kim and Angela for their input in to what we would want shared with the graduates and those who prayed for God to provide the right words. Despite much frustration in my preparation, when I actually presented the message God’s Spirit clearly spoke to many and I was so thrilled once again to witness His ongoing work in the hearts of those who want His will fulfilled in their lives. As you yourselves have experienced, at the conclusion of graduation they had all AIM alumni, present students, and future students stand and encircle the audience. It was staggering to think of what God has and will continue to do through that group and then, to realize that I am connected to this unique work that God has on earth was genuinely overwhelming. “I thank my God every time I remember”.

Literally, two weeks later, at Aimapalooza, I stood in a room again surrounded by people with a shared heritage and purpose. After all shared together how they saw God working in their lives, we drew in close and begin to sing. The videos will never be able to convey the tangible power that was in that room. It was as if God was restoring my spirit with each passing note. It was amazing and exhilarating! “I thank my God every time I remember”.

In James 1:17, God shares with us that “Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights…”. So when we experience things that are truly good and perfect here on this earth, a sliver of heavenly light is perceived for that moment, a tiny signal of what is coming for us in heaven. The result is that we carry this small fragment of God’s glory (in the form of a memory) with us to provide encouragement for future days and to serve as a motivational reminder of where we are headed. Though we experience good and perfect things all the time (since God is so good and faithful), these reunions stand out as very potent reminders of God’s love and work among us.

The AIM Alumni Association wants to be a catalyst for creating as many of these opportunities to reunite as possible. Since we are spread out across the world, none of us could attend all of them, but if every once in a while we could connect, how much richer our walk with God would be! This coming September, Labor Day weekend, we are inviting all that can to reunite with those who share a unique heritage and a common purpose. Join us for Aimstock! If you aren’t able to make it, especially if it is too far to travel, I encourage you to begin dreaming about creating an event in your area. We envision a day where events would happen all over the country that would provide a focal point for restorative community that comes from these events.

All of these special experiences of course are a hint. It is as if God is winking at us saying, “If you think this is good, you are going to be blown away by the final reunion.” So, especially if you are discouraged today, I pray that God fills you with courage as He reminds you of the good and perfect memories He has placed in your mind and heart and how those serve to tap you on the shoulder and remind you that the best is yet to come.

The Tulsa Workshop & Aimapalooza

Dear fellow AIM Alumni,

I wanted to personally invite everyone to the Tulsa Workshop, which is coming up on March 24-27. We’re going to begin on Wednesday night(which is a new aspect) at the Pavilion and we will end with a final session on Saturday beginning at 4pm. I am genuinely excited about the speakers we have lined up and wanted to note a few that share a connection to your heritage as an AIM student. Craig Hicks(AIM ’86), Tim Rush(’90) and I(’92) are going to speak. Also, many of you will recognize Mike Tanaro and Eli Hooper, who have been part of dozens of Camp Adventures, as well as Trey Morgan, who preached in Tulia, TX(on of our area churches) for several years. On Saturday, Misty (Kirkley) Algaier’s(‘97) husband, Sean, will speak, sharing from his experience of being on last season’s Biggest Loser on NBC. This is in addition to Terry Rush, Jeff Walling, Patrick Mead and many others who are extremely encouraging and challenging speakers. You can find the full schedule at www.tulsaworkshop.org.

Even more exciting to me is what happens on Friday night beginning after the evening keynote(Mike Cope). All AIM alumni are invited to be part of AIMapalooza. This event was begun out of sheer sadness. I was so sad that every year I would bump in to so many alumni and not have any time to really talk to them. We initially were going to do it at our house, but it quickly outgrew it so we have been meeting at the Memorial Drive Church of Christ building in the upstairs area. AIMapalooza is a very casual event where 40-70 of us eat and drink (whatever items that we all bring), sing, and visit, visit, visit. We officially wrap up around 11:30, but you can stay as long as the conversation lasts. It is such an encouraging event and this year we are thrilled to share with you a few of the things we’ve been working on with the AIM Alumni Association. This group is a grass roots effort to help AIM graduates come off the field with more support, information and encouragement so that their transitions can be smoother and healthier for them spiritually and emotionally. This effort is slow-going(since we all have full-time jobs), but continues to progress and, in time, we hope to offer some concrete help that will be a great blessing.

So, if at all possible, please join us at Workshop and AIMapalooza this year. If you have any questions about either, just let me know. We can’t wait to see you!
